Thirdly, subtract or add the whole numbers together and place the result aside.

Finally, we now add or subtract the numerators. As usual, place the answer over the denominator. If this fraction (answer) is improper, convert it to a mixed number.

Without forgetting your earlier calculated whole number, place it next to your new fraction.
