Counting and numbers made easy: Worksheets for first graders

As earlier said, we are here to help your 1^st graders understand place value and its importance in math.

Place value is the idea that each digit in a number has a different value depending on its position. For example, in the number 23, the digit 2 has a value of 20, and the digit 3 has a value of 3.

The value of each digit is determined by the place it occupies in the number. The place value chart below shows the names and values of each place in a two-digit number.

Place value is essential because it helps us read and write numbers correctly. It also helps us compare and order numbers, add and subtract numbers, and perform other operations with numbers.

Place value also helps us understand the meaning of numbers in different contexts, such as money, time, measurement, etc. For example, if you have 23 cents, you can write it as $0.23 or 23¢. If you have 23 minutes, you can write it as 23:00 or 0:23.

Above all, place value is a foundational tool for many math and advanced math skills like regrouping, multi-digit multiplication, decimal system, etc.

The ability to read and write numbers in the expanded form is a brilliant and effective way to show the place value of each digit in a number.

Expanded form is a way of writing a number as a sum of its place values. For example, the number 23 can be written in expanded form as 20 + 3. To write a number in expanded form, you need to identify the value of each digit and then add them together.

Here are some examples:

To read a number in expanded form, you need to add the values of each digit and then say the number. For example, to read the expanded form 20 + 3, add 20 and 3 and then say twenty-three.

Here are some ideas:

• Use base ten blocks or other manipulatives to model numbers and show their place values. For example, you can use ten rods and unit cubes to show 23 as two tens and three ones.
• Play games with dice or cards to make two-digit numbers and compare them using greater than (>), less than (<), or equal to (=) symbols. For example;

  You can roll two dice and make a two-digit number, such as 36. Then compare it with another number using >, <, or =.

• Use a hundreds chart to find patterns and relationships between numbers. For example, you can color all ten multiples on the chart and see how they end with zero. You can also use the chart to skip count by tens or ones.
• Write numbers in different forms, such as standard form (23), word form (twenty-three), or expanded form (20 + 3).

  You can also write numbers in different ways using commas or decimal points. For example, you can write 23 as twenty-three or two thousand three hundred.
