Special tips for fast understanding related multiplication and addition properties
Below are special tips for fast understanding related multiplication and addition properties.
There exist four basic properties of multiplication and addition, namely: the identity, commutative, associative and distributive properties.
♦ Identity Property
With the identity property, the sum of any number and zero is that number. E.g. 7 + 0 = 7, while
The product of any number and one is that number. E.g. 7 x 1 = 7
♦ Commutative Property
Here, when two numbers are added or multiplied, their sum or product is the same regardless of the order in which the numbers are placed.
e. g. 5 + 4 = 9 or 4 + 5 = 9 AND 5 x 4= 20 or 4 x 5 = 20
♦ Associative Property
When three or more numbers are added or multiplied, the sum or product is the same regardless of the way in which the numbers are grouped.
e. g. Addition : 2 + (5 + 7) = 14 or (2 + 5) + 7 = 14
Multiplication : 2 x (5 x 7) = 70 or (2 x 5) x 7 = 70
♦ Distributive Property
With the distributive property, the sum of two numbers times a third number is equal to the sum of each addend times the third number.
e. g. 3 x (5 + 8) = 39 or 3 x 5 + 3 x 8 = 39
